How to Compress an Image
- Click the upload area or drag a JPG, PNG, or WebP file onto it.
- Choose the output format — or keep the original.
- Set the quality (75% is a good starting point; 60–70% saves more at barely visible quality loss).
- Optionally set a max width or height to resize the image as well.
- Click "Compress Image" and compare the before/after sizes.
- Click "Download Compressed Image" to save.
Why Your Files Stay Private
Compression runs entirely in your browser using the Canvas API. No file is uploaded to a server, stored, logged, or shared. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the compressor will still work. Unlike most online compressors, your image never leaves your device.
Tips for Smaller Files
- Lower quality first — dropping from 90% to 75% usually saves 40–60% with no visible difference on screen.
- Then resize — if the image will display at 800px wide, there is no reason to keep it at 3000px.
- JPG for photos, PNG for graphics — JPG compresses photos far better. PNG is better for logos, screenshots, and images with text.
- WebP if the platform accepts it — WebP gives 25–35% smaller files than JPG at the same quality. Most browsers and CMS platforms support it now.
- Target 100–200 KB for web images — this is the sweet spot for page speed without visible quality loss.
