How to Use the US Tax Calculator
Enter your annual gross income. The calculator subtracts your pre-tax deductions (401k, HSA, traditional IRA) and your filing status's standard deduction, then applies the 2025 federal brackets to the remaining taxable income.
The effective rate is your total federal tax divided by gross income — the average rate you actually pay. The marginal rate is the rate on your last dollar of income — the bracket you are currently in. These are very different numbers, and both matter for planning.

Notes
- This calculates federal income tax only — not FICA (Social Security + Medicare), not state tax, not self-employment tax.
- Assumes the standard deduction. If you itemize, replace the standard deduction with your itemized total in the "Additional Deductions" field.
- Does not include credits (Child Tax Credit, Earned Income Credit, education credits) — subtract those from the tax owed manually.
- Does not include the 3.8% Net Investment Income Tax or Additional Medicare Tax for high earners.
