  5. Click "Copy" to copy the modified text back to your clipboard.

Why Your Text Stays Private

Everything runs in your browser. Your text is not sent to any server, stored, logged, or shared. When you close the tab, the text is gone. This is different from most online counters, which send your text to their servers. For confidential drafts, client emails, or unpublished articles, keeping everything local matters.

Frequently Asked Questions

How are words counted?

Words are counted by splitting the text on whitespace (spaces, tabs, newlines). A hyphenated word like "state-of-the-art" counts as one word. Numbers and symbols count as words if separated by spaces. This matches the counting method used by Microsoft Word and Google Docs.

How is reading time calculated?

Reading time assumes 200 words per minute — the average reading speed for adults reading English text. Speaking time assumes 130 words per minute — the average speed for reading aloud. Both are estimates; actual speed varies by individual and content complexity.

What counts as a sentence?

A sentence is counted by looking for terminal punctuation — periods (.), exclamation marks (!), and question marks (?). Two sentences without punctuation between them count as one. Abbreviations like "Dr." or "U.S." may cause an extra count; this is a known limitation of all character counters.

How is character count different from word count?

Character count includes every character — letters, numbers, spaces, punctuation, and line breaks. Word count is the number of words. For Twitter/X, the 280-character limit includes spaces and punctuation. For SEO meta descriptions, the 160-character limit also includes everything. Character count is the stricter measurement for character-limited platforms.

What is keyword density?

Keyword density is the percentage of times a word appears relative to the total word count. For example, if "content" appears 10 times in 500 words, its density is 2%. The "Top Keywords" list shows the most frequent non-trivial words in your text. Very high density (above 5%) can look like keyword stuffing to search engines.

Does this work for non-English text?

Partially. Character count works for any text. Word count depends on spaces between words — languages that do not use spaces (Chinese, Japanese, Thai) will count entire sentences as one word. For those languages, use a dedicated character counter. Reading time assumes English reading speed; other languages may differ.
