How to Convert HEIC to JPG

  1. Click the upload area or drag a HEIC/HEIF file onto it.
  2. Set the JPG quality (90% is a good balance of size and quality).
  3. Click "Convert to JPG" — the first conversion may take a few seconds while the decoder loads.
  4. Preview the result and click "Download JPG" to save.

Why Your Files Stay Private

This converter decodes HEIC using WebAssembly running entirely in your browser. No file is uploaded to a server, stored, logged, or shared. Unlike most online HEIC converters, your photo never leaves your device. You can even disconnect from the internet after the page loads and the converter will still work (after the decoder has loaded once).

What Is HEIC?

HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) is the default photo format on iPhones running iOS 11 and later. It uses HEVC compression to store high-quality photos at roughly half the file size of an equivalent JPG. Apple chose it to save storage space on iPhones.

The problem: HEIC is not universally supported. Windows computers often cannot open HEIC files without extra codecs. Many websites and apps reject HEIC uploads. Android phones may not display them. Converting to JPG solves compatibility — JPG works everywhere.

HEIC vs JPG: What's the Difference?

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this HEIC converter really free?

Yes — completely free, no signup, no watermark, no file limit. The tool runs entirely in your browser using WebAssembly. There is no server processing, so there is no cost per conversion to pass on to you. Convert as many files as you need.

Does converting HEIC to JPG lose quality?

Yes — some quality is lost because HEIC and JPG use different compression methods. HEIC stores more detail per byte. When converting to JPG, you are moving from a more efficient format to a less efficient one. At 90% quality, the visual difference is minimal for most photos. At 70–80%, some fine detail (textures, sharp edges) may soften. The conversion does not add detail that was never there — it simply re-encodes the decoded pixels.

Why does the first conversion take longer?

The HEIC decoder (libheif compiled to WebAssembly) is about 1–2 MB. It downloads once when you first convert a file, then stays cached for subsequent conversions. The first conversion may take 2–5 seconds depending on your connection and device. After that, conversions are near-instant.

Can I convert multiple HEIC files at once?

Not in this version — it processes one file at a time. For batch conversion, use a desktop tool like iMazing HEIC Converter (free, Windows/Mac), or the built-in "Transfer to Mac or PC" setting on iPhone (Settings → Photos → Transfer to Mac or PC → Automatic), which converts to JPG when transferring. For occasional single files, this browser tool is faster than installing software.

Does this work on iPhone or Android?

Yes — the tool runs in any modern browser. On iPhone, you can upload a HEIC file from your photo library and download the JPG. On Android, the same. No app install required. However, if you are already on iPhone, you can change the camera setting to "Most Compatible" (Settings → Camera → Formats → Most Compatible) to shoot JPG directly and skip conversion entirely.

Why does the original HEIC preview not show?

Most browsers cannot render HEIC natively. The preview area shows a placeholder for the original HEIC — this is expected. The converted JPG preview shows correctly because JPG is universally supported. The conversion itself works regardless; only the original preview is limited by the browser's native support.
