How GPA Is Calculated

GPA is a credit-weighted average of your grade points. Each course's grade point value is multiplied by its credit hours, then the total is divided by the total credits attempted.

GPA = Σ (Grade Point × Credits) ÷ Σ Credits

CGPA works the same way, but uses each semester's GPA and credits instead of individual courses. A semester with 15 credits and a 3.5 GPA carries more weight than a semester with 9 credits and a 4.0.

Standard 4.0 Grade Scale

Some universities use a 4.33 scale or omit plus/minus grades. Check your institution's official grading policy if your GPA seems off.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a good GPA?

A GPA above 3.5 is generally considered strong for most graduate programs and employers. 3.0–3.5 is solid. Below 3.0 may limit options for competitive graduate schools or scholarships. Different institutions and programs have different expectations — check the specific requirements for your target school or employer.

What is the difference between GPA and CGPA?

GPA usually refers to a single semester's grade point average. CGPA (Cumulative GPA) is the average across all completed semesters. Your CGPA is the number that appears on your transcript and is used for graduate school applications, scholarships, and some job applications.

How do credit hours affect GPA?

Credit hours are weights. A 4-credit course with an A (4.0) contributes more to your GPA than a 2-credit course with an A. This is why students often focus more effort on high-credit courses — they move the GPA more. The GPA calculator above automatically applies this weighting.

Does this calculator support a 5.0 scale?

This version uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus grades. Some countries (India, Pakistan, parts of the Middle East) use a 5.0 or 10.0 scale. If your institution uses a different scale, the raw calculation method is the same — only the grade point values change. You can enter your own grade point values if your scale differs.

Can I calculate what GPA I need to reach a target?

Not directly in this version. To plan a target GPA, you need to know your current cumulative GPA, total credits earned, and remaining credits. Then solve for the required GPA in remaining courses. A future update may add a "target GPA planner" to this tool.

Is my data private?

Yes — everything runs in your browser. Your courses, grades, and credits are not sent to any server, stored, or shared. When you close the tab, the data is gone. If you need a record, take a screenshot of the result before closing.
